DEAD WIFE’S RING.

CZECH’S CONTRIBUTION. LORD MAYOR SELLS FOR £250. LONDON, October 17. The retiring Lord Mayor of London, Sir Harry Twvford, at a dinner this week, related a story of a little East End Jewish tailor who called on him and said that all he could offer the Czechoslovak relief fund was his dead wife’s wedding ring, which he wished to sell on behalf of the fund. In spite of efforts to dissuade him from doing so, he left the ring on the table. The Lord Mayor, displaying the ring at the dinner, said he had already received a bid of £SO for, it, and that he would sell it to the highest bidder. One of the diners offered £IOO for the ring. Mrs Anthony de Rothschild called £2OO, but a French banker raised the price to £250, and secured the ring. Sir Harry Twyford urged the buyer to return the ring to the tailor, who, however, had not left either his name or bis address.
