“IRON LUNG” MOTHER.
THE CASE END 9 FATALLY. (United Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) VANCOUVER, October 26. A Port Arthur message states that the “iron lung” mother, Helga Sarakoski, is also dead.
A Montreal cablegram dated October 19 stated: For the first time in medical history a woman, aged 17, who was suffering from infantile paralysis, gave birth to a baby girl when inside a respirator, the, so-called “iron lung,” at the Toronto Isolation Hospital. Physicians reported that the mother is doing well and the child has a fair chance of surviving.
It was reported next day that the baby had died. The mother was expected to live.
