ARRESTED ON STEAMER
ALLEGED THEFT AT SYDNEY.
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 28. An intending passenger by the liner Mariposa, which left Auckland tonight for San Francisco, was brought ashore shortly before the vessel’s departure, under a warrant of arrest from Sydney.
The man, Karl Jacob Regner, described as a merchant, aged 26, appeared before Mr C. R. Qrr Walker, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, charged that, at Sydney, between May 31 and June 27; he stole £l6 15s 9d, the property of Thomas William Dockerty, trading as the Kornoff Company. The police, applying for a remand until July 5, said that Regner was arrested -on a provisional warrant issued by the New South Wales police. If bail was sought, the police asked that it should be substantial.
Appearing for Regner, Air Trevor Henry said that the amount mentioned in the charge was small. Regner had informed him that there was some civil action in Sydney respecting the matter, and that he was cleared so far as liability was concerned. He came here under his own name, and for five days had been at a city hotel. Ho had £l7O, and there had been no attempt to defeat his creditors. When questioned by the police, he immediately admitted his identity.
The Alagistrate granted a remand, and fixed bail at £l5O, or two securities of £75, and ordered Regner to report to the police daily.
