YOUTH’S BAD START.
DEEMED ROGUE AND VAGABOND. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Convicting John Joseph Hodgens, a seaman, aged 18, charged with being a rogue and vagabond, in that he was found without lawful excuse in possession of implements of housebreaking—a screwdriver, file and rubber gloves—and two minor charges of theft, Mr Stilwell, S.M., said: “You are only a lad and you have made a pretty bad start in this country. I cannot help but feel you should be given a chance of pulling yourself together and settling down. The atmosphere seems to savour of the romantic result of reading trashy magazines. If you want to carry on in, the direction you indicate, you are in for a pretty sorry time.”
