RUGBY FOOTBALL.

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS. TOWN v. COUNTRY TEAMS. An apology was received at the meeting of the Management Committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union last evening from the person at Methven who allegedly abused the referee at a senior grade match at Springburn on May 7. The match was declared: off when the spectator concerned refused to leave the field after he had been ordered to do so by the referee. The apology was accepted. Mr N. Robilhard (president) presided at the meeting.

No objection will be raised by the No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority to licensed motor-bus operators waiving the standing time charge for the carriage of footballers in the Ashburton Rugby Union’s district, according to advice received from the licensing authority at the meeting of the management committee of the union last evening. The letter added that the matter had been discussed with the Ashburton branch of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance, which felt that the charge for waiting ,time was against the interests of all parties concerned. It was decided to advise the clubs of the position. The referee of the fourth grade match between Allenton and Technical High School (Mr S. Alexander) reported having ordered off R. Plunkett for striking a player when tackled, and also for having incited his team to use hard tactics. The case was taken in committee, and the player’s name plae<xl on the caution list. Mr 'S. Pennall, referee of the senior match between Methven and Technical Old Boys at Methven on Saturday, wrote that lie had ordered off R. Lilley for abusive language. The player was stood down for one playing Saturday.

Mr C. M. Thomas forwarded his resignation from the draw committee. It was resolved to thank him lor his services, and to ask the Allenton Club to nominate a successor,

The New Zealand Union advised that the South Island Maori trial match had been offered to the Canterbury Union, and therefore the request that the match bo played in Ashburton could not be acceded to. The Eastern Southland Union wrote inviting a representative team from the Ashburton Union to play the Eastern team at Gore. It was decided to leave the matter over until later in the season. The Rullor Union advised that a representative team from the Union would not he touring this season, and were therefore unable to accept' this Union’s invitation to play a match at Ashburt-on.

The South Canterbury Union informed that they definitely had no available date for a match in June, July, or August, as they had already arranged a full programme.

A letter was received from the Springburn Football Club applying to have AV. Taylor re-graded from junior to third grade. The application was granted. It was agreed to allow, High School to enter a third grade team in the second round of the competition. Footballs were granted to the following schools :—Awaroa, Rokeby, Highbank, Alford: Forest, Winslow, and Tinwald. Draw for Saturday. The draw, with referees, for matches on Saturday is as follows: — 'Senior Grade —Rakaia v. Methven, at Methven (Mr F. Kennedy); Technical Old Boys v. Springburn, at Springburn (Mr C. Stevenson); Old Boys, a bye. Junior Grade—Methven v. Allentcn at Ashburton ((Mr C. Wellman); Rakaia v. Hinds, at Rakaia (Mr K. Hood); Old Boys v. Eiffelton, at Eiffelton (Mr S'. Pewnall).

Third Grade.—Old Boys v. Technical Old Boys, at Ashburton Domain (the Rev. Dr. G. Harrison); Tinwald v. Celtic, at Tinwald (Mr R. Rose); Methven v. Allenton, at Methven. (Mr M. Betts); Hinds v .Springburn, at Hinds (Mr G. Farrell). Fourth Grade—Technical B v. Fiffelton, at Ashburton Domain (Mr D. McDougall); Technical A v. Rakaia, at Rakaia (Mr A. McLennan); Allenton v. THE INTER-ISLAND MATCH. POSTPONED TILL JUNE 11. WELLINGTON, May 30. The annual inter-island Rugby match is to be played at Athletic Park on June 11, instead of next Saturday, as originally planned. SOUTHERN NOMINATIONS. The following Otago players have been nominated for the South Island team: —J. Taylor, N. A. Mitchell, J. Berghan, D. Trevatham, H. Simon, and A. A. Parkhill.
