ARRANGEMENTS OF DEBATES. The weekly meeting of the Ashburton Catholic Club was held last evening, when Mr J. P. McDonnell presided over a good attendance. Messrs M. L. Crequer, J. L. Connell and J. fl. Taylor were selected to represent the club in a debate with the Eiffelton Club, taking the negative side on the question: “That the economic future of New Zealand depends on agricultural pursuits - rather than industrial.” It was decided to enter three teams in the table tennis competitions. The following subjects were submitteed to St. Stephen’s for the debate to be held on June 13: “That State ownership and control of industry is preferable to private enterprise” ; “that the power of the press be curtailed.” The programme for June was drawn up os folows: —June 13, debate v. St. Stephen’s; June 20, open evening; June 27, junior debate. The programme for the evening took the form of a table tennis tournament, which was won by Mr D. McDonnell.
