METHVEN. PRESENTATION TO MR 0. GOODWIN. « Owing to Mr O. Goodwin’s inability to attend the annual social evening of the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association on Wednesday, a number of members of the executive of the Association visited his residence at 'Lauriston, to make a presentation to him. The president (Mr C. H. Watson) referred to the many services of Mr Goodwin to the Association over a lengthy period of years, and expressed the hope that his trip to Australia would be a pleasant one, and that they would again see him back fit to take further interest in the Association’s affairs. RAKAIA, METHODIST LADIES’ GUILD. The R-akaia Methodist Ladies’ Guild held its monthly meeting recently. Mrs H. Hopwood presided. A missionary afternoon was held and missionary letters from the Solomon Islands veie read by Miss Hazel McGeorge. A parcel of clothing was made up for Sister' Eleanor Doby,- of Auckland. It was decided to hold a silver tree evening next month. Mesdames H. Hopwood and England were hostesses. The Foresters' Lodge. The monthly meeting of Court Star of R-akaia Lodge, A.0.F., was held recently. The C.R. (Pro. H. J. W. Knights) presided. Sick pay amounting to £1 was passed in favour of one member. The woodward reported that there were at present no sick on the funds. A report on the district meeting was given by Bro. S. IT. Shellock, who also presented the gavels won in the membership competition. It was decided, to visit Court Star of Canterbury in July. One candidate was initiated and another proposed. WILLOWBY, *THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The monthly meeting of the Wilow-by-Eiffelton Women’s Institute, was held on Saturday afternoon in the Eiffel ton Schoolroom. Mrs A. S. Hayman was in the chair. . The meeting opened with the Institute Ode and the Aspirations. The monthly motto was read “Mountains are not climbed by looking at them.” Some interesting savoury recipes were given when the roll call “What to do with lib of Tomatoes,” was answerMrs Hayman and Miss Mary Taylor .were appointed sick visitors for the en- ■ suing month. Two new members were welcomed. Letters were read frofn Mrs Stanley Holland and Mrs J, A. Hodges, who have left the district. The president reported forwarding the subscription gift to Mr and Mrs Angus Robertson, who have left, for s Otago, . A motion of congratulation to Miss Sheehan on reaching her majority was carried with acclamation. On behalf of members, Mrs S. P. Taylor congratulted Mrs Hayman and Mrs R. J. Lattimore oin being placed second and third (equal) respectively in the Fairfield Essay Competition, Further arrangements were made in the forthcoming Bay competition. It was decided to hold a produce stall at an early date in Ashburton, the heads of the . competition houses and the president to be a committee of management. A motion of sympathy in her bereavement was passed with Mrs 11. JChapman. It was decided to send a gift to the conference gift-table scheme by the delegate, Mrs H. Crossman. ' Mrs R. J. Chapman opened the golden thread talks with an interesting account of Pioneer Women." Miss Robins (A.C.E. tutor), began a series of educational addresses by an illustrated lecture in dress styles. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mesdames Emery, Sheehan and Ford. The competitions, which were judged by Miss Robins, resulted: Table marrow, Mrs P. Sheehan 1, Mrs H. Crossman 2, Miss M. M. Lill and Mrs It. J. -Chapman (equal) 3. Double chrysanthemums, Miss M. M. Lill 1, Mrs E. Soal 2, Mrs R. J. Lattimore and Miss Hazel Lill (equal) 3. Calendula, Miss M. Taylor 1, Mrs S. P. Taylor 2, Miss Jean Taylor 3. Prettiest cake plate, Miss Jean Tavlor 1, Miss E. (Hayman 2, Mrs S* H. Lill 3. The meeting closed with the National Anthem, Miss M. M. Lill being piatiist.

LOWCLIFFE. THE FARMERS’ UNION. The annual meeting of the Lowcliffe Branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Road Board office, the president (Mr D. M. Bruce) presiding over a failattendance. The president referred to the loss the Union and the district had suffered in the passing of Mr G, Tait, Members, carried a motion of sympathy in silence. ' The balance-sheet showed the finances to he in a very satisfactory position. Reporting on the activities of the branch during the past year, the president said that three lecturers had visited the district and given helpful addresses. Two card matches had been played with tho Eiffelton branch. The election of officers resulted: — President, Mr D. M. Bruce; vice-presi-dent, Mr W. M. Tilson; secretary and treasurer, Mr D. G. Tait; delegates to

Provincial Executive, Messrs W. McKeage and W. Bruce (Ashburton) ; delegates to annual conference, Messrs D. G. Tail and W. M. Tilson.

WAKANUI, THE HALL SOCIETY. A meeting of the committee of the Wakanui Hall -Society was held on Saturday evening, when the president (Mr M. D. McDowell) occupied the chair. The treasurer’s statement showed the finances to he in a more satisfactory state at the time of year than in some years past. An application was received, from Air W. J. Waller for the lease of the section adjoining the hall. It was decided to lease on the usual conditions. The resignation of Mrs R. Mcllraith as caretaker was accepted with regret and Mrs C. Wakeham was appointed to the position. The question; of a water supply was discussed at length. Several suggestions for providing water were fully investigated and it was decided to drive a pipe in close proximity to the hall and install a pump. It was also thought advisable to ask for the assistance of -a local water diviner in selecting the site. The question of holding some function to augment the funds received consideration, and it was unanimously resolved to hold a, flower show and fair in the springtime. A meeting is to be held in August to make preparatory arrangements. MAYFIELD. ■PRESBYTERIAN MISSIONARY UNION. The Mayfield branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union met recently. Mrs W. T. Elmslie presided. It was decided to form a branch of the International Bible-reading Association. A missionary letter was read from Miss Sampson at Opotiki. Accounts of mission work in China were read by Mesdames Elmslie, Edmond, Freeman, and Sewell.
