FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” May 30, 1888). Musical and Literary Association — A Musical and Literary Association has been formed, in connection with the Ashburton Presbyterian Church, and the opening of the session will take place tins evening in tile Church at 7 o’clock. Members of the congregation,Wvitii those who have enrolled tnemselves as members, are expected to attend, and the proceedings will take tlie lorm of a social and Harmony meeting. Kefresliments will be provided. A large number or members have already oeen enrolled, and with energy and union the session of 1888 should be a success. Tinwald Presbyterians—The annual congregational meeting of the Tinwald Presbyterian Church was held on Wednesday evening, the Rev. A. Blake in the ouair. The treasurer's report was read, also a statement of the church building fund showing that a sum of £273 had been expended in payment of church building, furnishing, purchase of section, fencing, etc. Votes of thanks were carried to those who had generously assisted in wiping off the debt, and especially to the pastor and Mrs Blake for their efforts in raising funds, and avoiding the necessity' of borrowing. Office-bearers were appointed for the ensuing year and Sir Taylor, who wa; present with Mr J. Shearer as deputy from Flemington, having addressed the meeting, it was brought to a close.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” May 30, 1913). Bowling Club Annual—About fifty members attended the fourteenth annual meeting of the Ashburton Bowling Club in the Masonic Hall last evening. The president (Mr Peter Stewart) presided. The balance-sheet showed that the total receipts had been £174 18s Id, including a, credit balance from 1911-12 of £49 14s Id, and subscriptions amounting to £ll7 16s; that the expenditure had aggregated £l5B 0s 9d (rent and upkeep of green £4O, additions to pavilion £57 10s 6d, redemption of debentui'es and interest thereon £25 19s); and that the credit balance was therefore £l6 17s 4d. The electioli of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr P. Stewart (re-elected); vice-president, Mr A. McClure; treasurer, Mr J. D. Stewart (re-elected); secretary, Mr W. H. Higgins; auditor, Mr J. R. Hart (re-elected); executive committee, Messrs H. C. Craighead, D. Campbell, J. Boothroyd (re-elected), T. M. Clark, G. Meddins, and J. T. M. Priest; Match Committee, Messrs D. Campbell, J. :D. Stewart, and H. C. Craighead; Social Committee, Messrs W. Dixon (convener), J. Ingham and J. Cameron; delegate to the Christchurch] Centre, Dr. Thomas (re-elect-delegates to the Ashburton Sports Association, Messrs H. R. C. McElrea (re-elected), T. H, Undrill and H. C. Percy.
