ITALIAN PLANS
NAVAL BASE IN SOMALILAND.
EFFECT ON BRITISH INTERESTS. . TRADE ROUTES TO THE EAST. (United Press Association —Copyright.) LONDON, May 20. The Rome correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” reports that great importance is attached to the visit of General Terruzzi tq Italian East Africa, for which place he sailed yesterday, accompanied by several officials. It. is understood that in addition to speeding up plans for the extraction of Abyssinia’s minerals and other resources, General Teruzzi will examine the possibility of constructing a naval base in Italian Somaliland for the protection of 'ltalian interests in the Indian Ocean. The naval correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” points out that the establishment of a naval base in this region would constitute a potential danger to Great Britain’s eastern trade routes, and might als<* partly nullify the strategic advantage that would be gained by sending shipping via the •Cape, in the event of trouble in the Mediterranean.
