(From Our Own Correspondent#.) METHVEN. THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. Mrs L. A. Watson (vice-president) presided oyer the January meeting of the Methven Women’s Institute. It was decided to record the splendid : work of Mrs E. G. Harvey (president), who has left the district. Greetings were extended by Mrs Patterson (president of the Hokitika Women’s Institute). The afternoon took the form of musical and other items. Those contributing were: Songs, Miss Yvonne Wright, Mrs Patterson; vocal duets, Mesdames Patterson and Ruegg; Highland dances, Miss Eileen Nish; fancy dances, Miss Yvonne Wright; recitation, Miss Molly Ruegg. Community singing was led by Mrs J. Temple. A competition, a Scottish -wedding', was much enjoyed. The monthly competitions resulted: Oat cake: Miss Maud Chambers 1, Mrs S. M. Jackman 2, Mrs A. Lawrence 3, Shortbread: Mrs A. Guthrie 1, Mrs A. Lawrence 2, Mrs 0. W. Amberger 3. Scottish emblem: Mrs Norman Macintosh 1, Mrs R« Ireland 2, Mrs J. Temple 3. Something new from something old: Mrs A. Lawrence 1, Mrs D. Chambers 2, Miss M. Chambers 3.

RUAPUNA. THE WOMEN’S DIVISION. The monthly meeting of the Ruapuna branch of the Women’s Division was held in the Domain, Mrs Clifford presiding over a good attendance of members and visitors. Members were reminded of the picnic to Fairfield freezing Works on February 24. It was decided to buy £1 worth of spring bulbs, Mrs T. Sewell to supervise the purchase. The rest of the afternoon took the form of a garden social, which members of the Westerfield Branch attended. The day was beautifully fine. Tennis and clock golf and other competitions were played, after which afternoon tea, provided by the members, was handed round. Results of the competition were: Clock golf, v Mrs T. Sewell 1; chain-stepping, Mesdames Hollana and G. Sewell (equal) 1; nail-driving, Mrs T. Sewell. The monthy competitions resuted: — Premier bloom: Mrs King 1, Mrs Holland 2, Mrs J. Moore 3. Best Christmas cake: Mrs Boyd 1, Mrs Patterson 2, Mrs Holland 3. Raspberry jam: Mrs Allan 1, Mrs Holland 2, Mrs O’Connor J. Gent.’s buttonhole: Mrs’ Holland 1, Mrs Allan 2 and 3. Pod Peas: Mrs G. Sewell 1 and 2, Mrs T. Sewell 3. Large Bowl Mixed Flowers: Mrs King 1, Mrs T. Sewell 2. Small Bowl Flowers: Mrs King 1, Mrs T. Sewell 2. Votes of thanks were accorded Mesdames T. Johnstone, H. Moore and M. Jackson for judging. NEWLY-SHORN SHEEP LOST. A total of 234 points of rain fell at Ruapuna on Saturday night and Sun-, day. The wind was cold and losses of newly-shorn sheep were heavy.
