RECORD RAIN
DAY’S FALL AT HASTINGS. NINE AND A HALF INCHES. DAMAGE TN HAWKE’S BAY. (Per Press Association.) HASTINGS,'This Day. A storm of unusual severity swept Hawke’s Bay last night, doing considerable damage to orchards and plantations. Heavy rain fell throughout the night and continues to-day. The rivers are rising rapidly, and at noon there was no sign of the weather clearing. The rainfall for the 24 hours to 9 o’clock this morning Was 9£ inches, a record 24 hour fall for Hastings.
RETAILERS SUFFER LOS 9. SHOPS IN HASTINGS FLOODED. HASTINGS, This Day. Later reports state that the damage to fruit crops is not very great. Telephone communication with the country' areas is disrupted and in some parts electricity is cut off.
The water is feet deep on the Pakowhai Road in Poplars’ Avenue, and at Pakowhai bridge the Ngaruroro River is still rising.
Some retailers on the west side of Herctaunga Street suffered through the downpour last night, the shops being flooded to a depth of a foot in some cases through the influx of water from the streets and backyards. Private and public gardens also suffered through the high wind.
RAIN BENEFITS PAHIATUA.
PAHIATUA, This Day
Although the Pahiatua district stood the dry spell better than most parts, the rain which began on Sunday evening and continued yesterday unabated, afforded relief to pastures. Since the rain began 9.7 indies has fallen.
The temperature, which was 85 degrees on Friday, dropped yesterday to 63.4. There is a bitterly cold gale to-day.
