AFTER LONG SERVICE.
MATERNITY HOSPITAL CLOSED.

DUNEDIN, January 23
Established and opened 33 years ago by the Rt. Hon. Richard John Seddon, then Prime Minister, St. Helens Maternity Hospital was officially closed on Saturday afternoon. It performed valuable service to the motherhood of the city at a time when maternity welfare was in urgent need of, improvement but with the passage of time and the advances made in the science of obstetrics, its usefulness came to an end, and its operations have been taken over by the modern Queen Mary Maternity Hospital. Dr. Paget (Inspector of Hospitals), presided at the ceremony, and the principal speaker was the Minister for Health (the Hon. P. Fraser). A total of 5500 babies was born at the hospital, and another 1500 babies in the district during the time a district nurse was employed, so that the institution had taken care 5f 70C0 babies. Nearly 200 midwives have been trained there.
