A NEW CHURCH
MOMENTOUS RELIGIOUS MOVE.
ANGLICAN AND FREE BODIES.
FUSION AFFECTS 32,000,000
(United' Press Association—Copyright.') (Received This Day, 2.16 p.m.) LONDON, January 21.
The most momentous religious development of modern times, directly affecting nearly 32,000,000 people, is foreshadowed by the completion of the joint plan for the fusion of the Church of England and the Methodist, Congregational, Baptist Presbyterian and Moravian denominations.
The draft was drawn up by the Archbishop of York, eleven Anglican Bishops, and four leaders of the Free Churches, and it provides the foundation of a united Church of England. The plan, which is the outcome of years of study, has provided the inauguration of an Episcopal Church composed of Anglican Bishops who accept the new constitution and a number of Free Church Bishops chosen for consecration by their Churches. The Archbishop of Canterbury is ex officio chairman of the General Assembly.
The new Church would be free from control of the State in respect of faith, worship, morals and discipline and government, while acknowledging the jurisdiction of the Civil Courts in such matters as property and endowments.
