CATTLE SHOW MUDDLE.
FOURTH PRIZE COW GETS CHAMPIONSHIP. The classic precedent of the overhead championship at the Sraithfield Show being awarded to a beast which was not its breed champion faded into insignificance beside an incident at the Brough Show, Westmorland; on September 9. There was an exceptionally strong display of Shorthorn cattle, chiefly non-pedigree, and one class having 25 entries. Double judging is the .rule. In the in-milk cow class a young loan cow from Mr OL Dent, Natebv, Kirkbv Stephen, was placed fourth, and given a commended ticket. Later in the show this cow was paraded in a class for dairy rows or heifer fed on a proprietary cake, and she was standing in the third place when the judges called in the referee (Mr C. Fawcett, Hard row, Hawes) ; and he put the cow from third place to first. Later on, in a challenge cup competition for best female bred by exhibitor, the cow stood third again—-behind two cows 'which were not in the previously mentioned special class. On the strength of her being a first prize winner, she was paraded for the supremo championship along with the two aforementioned cows and other stock. For this championship if is a rule that the referee acts along with the two judges. This time the' three of them disagreed, and a fourth judge (Mr J. F. Hindson, Shnp) was called in from the horse ring. On his verdict, the Natehy cow. been me supremo champion, with a cow belonging to Mr J. Capstick, Ravenstonedale.
winner of the “best female” cup, standing reserve. So groat was the excitement that a numbers of spectators left the ringside and clustered around the judging. The result was applauded.
