NOTICE TO POWERS.
WARNED OFF THE RED SEA. BRITAIN’S QUIET MOVE. LONDON, January 9. While Bari pumped out propaganda to the Arabic world and Italy negotiated a treaty with Yemen, seeking to increase her influence in. Southern Arabia by giving her a foothold on both sides of the Straits of Bab-el-Mandeb, Britain quietly issued an Order-in-Council formally declaring that Hadramaut always had been part of the Aden protectorate. The real reason for the declaration was to show clearly that Britain would not tolerate any territorial change which other Powers might seek to secure. She would not allow any European Power to establish itself on the •east side of the Bed Sea.
Hadramaut, with an area of nearly 100,000 square miles, lies between Yemen and Orhan, and lacks a central authority. From it come most of the Arab settlers in the ast Indies.
