ST. JAMES THEATRE. The final screening of the Australianmade Cinesound film, “Tall Timbers, adapted from Frank Hurley’s story, will be made at the St. James Theatre this evening. It is supported by an entertaining programme of short features. Torn from the newspaper headlines of the struggle turning proud Spam into a shambles, “The Last Tram From Madrid,” Paramount’s dramatic thunderbolt shows at the St. James Theatre to-morrow and on Wednesday. It is tho unforgettable tale of ten lives, thrown together in a tangled web of conflicting emotion and supreme passion. “The Last Train From Madrid, last life-line of' a ravaged land, features a superb cast, headed by such favourites as Dorothy Lamour, of The Jungle Princess” and “Swing High, Swing Low”; Gilbert Roland, Lew Ayres, Karen Morley, Anthony Qiunn, Olympe Bradna, Lee Bowman, Helen Mack and Lionel Atwill. It is a great human document—the story of how everyday folks' like you and you and react to turmoil and strife! SCOTTISH SOCIETY’S DANCE. There was a large attendance at the weekly dance of the Ashburton Countj Scottish Society in the Grange Hall on Saturday evening. The Monte Carlo was won by Mr and Mrs A. Beimison. Extras were given by Mrs McGregor and Messrs G. Chilton and A. Dolphin. Masters of Ceremonies were Messrs T. McGregor and G. Chilton. Music was played by Cook’s Orchestra. The net proceeds are to be donated to the Pipe Band’s new uniform fund.
