BIG ROAD RACE
CHRISTCHURCH TO TIMARU. EICHTY-ONE RIDERS START. THE POSITIONS AT ASHBURTON. Conditions were ideal to-day for the Christchurch to Timaru cycle race, competitors being favoured with a fairly strong breeze. Eighty-one riders started. The race is described as the 100 Miles South Island Road Championship, but the actual distance is nearer 114 miles. The first rider to pass through Ashburton was W. C. Rouse (Pareora) off the 52min mark, who arrived at 12.10 p.m., followed closely by A. J. Aunett (Christchurch), M. Luke (Timaru) and F. L. Alleyne (Christchurch) off 50 minutes.
Four scratch men arrived at 12.53 p.m. They were D. A. Swanston (Christchurch), L. B. Carr (Ashburton) L. Dolheguy (Christchurch), and J. H. Newlove (Dunsandel). J. McGee arid W. Houston, both of Ashburton, off 46 minutes and 48 minutes respectively, arrived at 12.16 p.m. There were not many people in East Street waiting for the riders to make their appearance.
