COLOUR ON THE VERANDAH SOME NEW OUTDOOR FURNISHINGS

TTHERE is no part of a house that is used more than a verandah, particularly in the summer time, and the climate makes a verandah almost a necessary complement to any house in keeping with the much-boosted New Zealand outdoors life. So many homes are built with beautiful outlooks that it is appropriate there should be somewhere to relax and admire the ever-changing views. Since verandahs come in for a good deal of use, it is necessary that the furniture should be able to stand wear and tear as well as appear attractive. Now that summer is almost here housewives are beginning to think of buying new furnishings to brighten up the verandah. The first consideration is floor covering—if your verandah has not the popular parquet flooring—and lots of colour can be introduced by having coir or seagrass matting in bright colours. The newest designs are in bold triangles with such combinations as orange and green, red and brown, bright blue and dark blue, or fawn and tangerine. For the verandah that opens off a bedroom which is carpeted with a variegated pattern linos in mottled designs will make an excellent match and also a good background for the furniture. Chromium is the very latest idea for verandah furniture and for the verandah of the seaside home it is invaluable because sea air will not rust it. It is also strong and serviceable. Very attractive verandah suites in

chromium, combined with black plush leather, can be bought. . A neat accessory is a cocktail traymobile which could be set with frosted glasses with black rims to complete the striking colour scheme. No verandah is complete without a settee which can be easily converted into a bed at night, should. an extra bed be needed. Many of these, settees are now being made with extra width and length and some can be either a double or single bed. Made of cane, they can be upholstered in brightly-coloured cottage weaves which promise to .be a serviceable material for verandah chairs and beds. On a hot day when every room in the house seems to be stifling there is nothing more pleasant than luncheon on the verandah with shady awnings pulled down to shut out the sun. The table settings must be planned for pleasant coolness, so a suggestion would be a palegreen tablecloth and crockery in the same pale shade with bands of contrasting colour. There are a few things more appealing on a hot day than cool drinks served in long glasses to the tune of tinkling ice. The colour of glasses makes them the right thing for a brightly-furnished verandah. Some have coloured spots n them, while others can be bought in various colours to match a small verandah traymobile, which is a handy piece of furniture at any time.
