USES FOR THE OVAL. SEVERAL DATES RESERVED. The Ashburton Borough Council met last evening Avheti there Avere present the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods), Messrs E. H. 6 it, 11. Kerr, J. T. Pratley, J. McElhinney, H. W. Sherratt, S. Mitchell, E. Buchanan, J. ShaAV, J. Thompson and Dr. J. Connor. The financial statement shoAved that receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £377 Bs, the chief items being rates £226 18s 9d, H-ents £2B 0s Sd, water supply £27 8s lOd, abattoir fees £47 2s 2d, licenses £2O. The Ashburton Technical High School Avrote asking the Council to make, its usual donation to the Board’s funds. It Avas agreed to grant £6. Messrs Moore’s Ltd. applied for permission to close off and use for an attraction for children the right-of-Avay adjoining the company’s property from December 4 till after Christmas. It Avas decided that permission he granted provided other users of the right-of-Avay consent. It Avas left to the Toavii Clerk (Mr R. C. Major) to ascertain Avhether similar letters had been sent to the swimming clubs and schools in the Borough, and if not, then the Council will send copies. Domain Board. Sitting as a Domain Board, the Council received the report of the Curator on Avork carried out by his staff oa er the past tAvo Aveeks. The Ashburton Silver Band Avrote applying for the use of the Domain on December 27, 28 and 29, and the right to charge up to Is entrance fee on two evenings, for the purpose of holding entertainments to raise funds to send the band to the contest at Palmerston North in February. The hand also sought permission to run a motor-boat, or two, on the lake for the Avliolc of that Aveek. Permission Avas granted, it being a provision that a public risk policy he taken out to cover the period mentioned. The Ashburton County Schools’ Sports Association sought permission for a closed day on the Domain Oval on Friday, December 3, for the holding of the annual sports. Permission Avas granted.. The Ashburton High School Old Boys Cricket Club wrote applying for water to -be connected to the top ground which it is renting. It Avas decided to inquire into the question. In an endeavoui' to re-establish its activities, the Ashburton Amateur Cycling and Athletic Club wrote it was inviting athletes from Christchurch and South Canterbury clubs to take part in a meeting ±o-morroAV evening, and i-t sought permission to take up a collection to defray the necessaiy expenses. Permission Avas granted. The Reserves Committee, through the chairman (Mr 11. Kerr) presented a number of recommendations in regard to the renovation of the dressing sheds at the Domain baths and they were adopted. Cemetery Board. Sitting ns a Cemetery Board, the Council received the financial statement, which shoAved that there Avas a credit balance of £6l 14s 2d. Receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £ls 12s 6d.
