(From Our Own Correspondent*.) LAU RISTON SCHOOL RAISED A GRADE. The monthly meeting of the Lauriston School Committee was attended by Messrs C. A. Fyfe (chairman), S. Ashworth, T. Stapleton, T. Greenaway and the headmaster (Mr J. A. Mackie). The Education Board wrote advising that the grade of the school was to be advanced next year because of the present improved roll number. It was decided to have new fences and gates erected at the entrances to the school gardens. , The headmaster reported that the school post office banking system would be begun soon. It was decided to hold the annua) school picnic at Timaru on Wednesday, December 15. The break-up function was arranged for Thursday, December 16, at 2 p.m. LOWCLIFFE. THE WOMENS INSTITUTE. In the absence of Mrs Mcßae, Miss McKie presided at the monthly meeting of.the Women’s Institute. A motion of sympathy with Mrs McRae in her bereavement was carried, in silence. One new member was welcomed cn transfer from Wanganui. The golden thread was continued by Miss Reddecliffe, the subject being Queenstown. The Methodist Orphanage -wrote a letter thanking the institute for donations of 30 dozen eggs. Members were reminded of the holiday scheme and picnic to Fairfield in February. Books and magazines were handed in by members to be sent to the Ashburton hospital and, the Tuarangi Men’s Home. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Campbell for framing the aspiration for the institute room. On behalf of members Mrs P. E. Cross made a presentation to Miss B. Anderson, who is leaving the district and referred to her good work as a junior member. Being member’s day, members then took charge, and a very enjoyable afternoon was spent in games and competitions, the winners of the latter being Mrs Hawke,snr., Mrs iPearce and Miss E. Anderson. A dainty afternoon tea was handed, round by members and a very enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem.
