LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE.' (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 23, 1887.) Horse Market.—Mr T. Bullock reports for the week ending Saturday, November 19: The entry for the day comprised 26 horses, principally light harness horses ,and hacks. Although the biddings were somewhat slow, I succeeded in selling 16 out of the 26 entered at the following prices, viz.: Medium draught, aged, of a fairly good stamp, £l2; inferior, £3 to £4; light harness horses, £6, £6 ss, £B, and for an unbroken filly £l2 was obtained. Longbeach Road Board.—A letter was r<j|id from the Coldstream Road Board, stating that a meetiing would be called to consider the proposed works on Surveyor’s road; in the meantime any work done by the Longbeach Board would be at its own cost. It was pointed out that this was the only road crossing the Hinds which had a traffic bridge, and that on the Longbeach side a metalled road had been made to the river, but on the Coldstream side it was impassable in the wet season. It was resolved to apply to the County Council to vest the control of that portion of the road dividing the two districts in this Board. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 23, 1912.) Collins’ grounds, the Baring Square Parsonage Fund will benefit to the extent of about £ls. As a number of free tickets were issued, the attendance must have been between 300 and 400.

Shunting Accident.—While shunting in the railway yards at Ashburton yesterday two loaded trucks were kicked off above Havelock Street Crossing. They were given such an impetus that they crashed) nto and overturned a truck standing- on the turntable which leads to the National Mortgage grain sheds. The men were engaged working the truck on the siding, which was loaded with manure and stood side on to the run-aways. The man, seeing the trucks approaching, ran to meet them and applied the brakes, but too late to avoid damage being done'.
