FIRE IN AMERICAN HOTEL. NOTED BOXING COACH RESCUED. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 2.20 p.m.) NEW YORK, November 21. A message from Annapolis states that Merle Webb, the Naval Academy boxing coach who coached four Olympic teams, narrowly escaped death. He was one of 61 including 50 society sub-debutantes who liad attended the midshipmen’s ball, driven from their rooms when fire partially destroyed the historic Carvelhall Hotel. The damage is estimated at 100,000 dollars. The firemen found Webb wandering inside, blinded by smoke and unable to locate the exit after lie had rushed in in an effort to recover 400 valuable trophies. He saved only a two-foot bronze statuette, a present from General Pershing, which he was carrying in his arms when led out. Ten firemen were cut and bruised. Scores of youths aided the firemen and recovered most of the girls’ luggage. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
