Provided no serious hold-up is experienced in the acquisition of steel girders for bridge construction, the Minister of public works (the Hon. R. Semple prophesies that work on the South Island Main Trunk will be completed in 12 months under the estimated time. This is reported by Mr Meachen, M.P. for Wairau, who, accompanied Mr Semple on an inspection of the line on Friday and Saturday. The Minister made a close inspection of the northern section, paying special attention to the modern machinery lately installed with the object of expediting tunnelling operations.
