LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 22, 1887.) The Robin Hood Company—lt will he noticed by advertisement that the Rubin Hood combination will play here on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The company, which we understand consists of Christchurch artists, has on several occasions performed in the Cathedral City with great credit to itself, and will doubtless secure well filled houses on the occasion of its visit to Ashburton. Honorary . Officers.—We learn that, on the recommendation of Colonel Bailey, that Messrs Benjamin Lowe and J. Arthur Orr have been appointed honorary lieutenants in the Ashburton Rifle cadet volunteers. Both these young gentlemen have been members of the corps from its inception, and Major Douglas speaks very highly of them. We congratulate our. young friends on their well-merited promotion. Longbeach Roads.—At the meeting of the Longbeach Road Board Mr Small waited on the board with reference to shifting the ford on Terrace Road to the natural watercourse lower dow r n. He said that the property owners affected were agreeable to the change. It was resolved to continue the drain and to make a ford. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardi*,” Nov. 22, 1912.) Presentation.—Miss Prentice, who has been in charge of the dressmaking department of Messrs G. Hefford and Company for the last two and a-half years, and who has now accepted a similar position with the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association, was on Friday evening met by her fellow workers and presented jWith a silver card case. The gift was* accompanied with expressions of good feeling and esteem. Miss M. Bramley, who has severed her connection with. Hefford and Company’s staff, was on the same occasion presented with a miniature set.

Transferred to Waimate.—On Saturday morning, a tthe National Mortgage and Agency Company’s office, the staff met to make a formal farewell to Mr W. H. Nicol, who has been transferred to the company’s Waimate office. On behalf of the staff Mr J. R. Brown (manager fo,r the branch) presented Mr Nicol with a fine pair of Busch nrismatic binoculars. In doing so he referred to the recipient’s many good qualities both in and out of the office, and, in congratulating him on his present promotion to that of accountant at the ,Wai ma te office, said that he hoped to hear of his further success in the near future.
