The Chamber of Deputies passed a vote of confidencei in the Government by 339 votes to 160, after a two* days’ barrage of criticism from the Opposition concerning the internal and general financial policy and foieign affairs. M. Chautemps, was, assured a majority when M. Flandin asked thei supporters of the Centre not to vote, thereby giving the Government a free hand. “I believe our defence expenditure, although heavy is nevertheless an economy in the present-day condition of Europe,” declared M. Chautemps in a speech reiterating France’s fidelity to her pledges and the Deague. He said that France would do everything to restore the- authority of the League. He also referred to the consolidation of accord with Britain, to which France was united in an equal desire for peace.
