THE SIXTY-FIRST SHOW

ASHBURTON A & P ASSOCIATION

STOCK . DISPLAY ONE OF GREAT MERIT

QUALITY A FEATURE THROUGHOUT

A year of considerable activity and advancement in its aims and objects was brought to a peak to-day by the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association with the holding of its sixty-first exhibition of stock, farm and dairy produce and home crafts, and once again the fixture has to be put on record as an outstanding effort oh the part of the Association. Officers and members were to-day able to gauge something of the value of the work they have been carrying ’out, a work that has been thoroughly pursued ovet a long period of years, and which is annually expressed in the display on the Showgrounds. It has been one of the functions of the Association to carry out educational work in the interests of the farming community and it has achieved a notable success in this direction. By means of lectures it has encouraged young men to take a greater interest in the finer points of the breeding of good stock and this must react to the good of the district in the long run.

Always a popular fixture, the Show to-day seemed to hold an even greater attraction for the people of the district. All roads seemed to lead to the Showgrounds, and the fixture proved to be as great a lure for the town dweller as it did for the country people.

There was much to hold the interest of patrons. In every department there was - something of outstanding merit that proved an attraction to a largo section of the spectators. It would be impossible to try to interest every person, for each has his own tastes in these matters, but it was remarkable! to note the keen survey of town people in their touring ’about among the

stock sections. It was a demonstration of the fact that unconsciously town and country realise how one is dependent on the other. The weather was bright and sunny at the start of the day, but a southerly wind sprang up and conditions at mid-day were cool. Nevertheless, there was plenty of shelter, and as the afternoon was brighter, with some sunshine, the attendance was not greatly affected. The judge of the technical classes in cookery said that she had never seen such a good class of sponge sandwich as that on exhibition. The entries (Standard V) were very creditable to the competitors. The organisation of a show of the size of Ashburton, with its total .of entries greater than that for similar fixtures that occupy more than one dfiy, is the essence of its success, and in this direction the Association is well served. The secretary (Mr W. H. Amos) has made a name for himself and the show in the manner in which " he prepares for the show, for the preparation is everything, and he has a capable staff to carry out his routine, which becomes simple when viewed' by the casual observer, but which is summed up in one word, efficiency. The president (Mr It. J. Martin) was the recipient of many congratulations ♦ to-day on the success of the show. He was on the job at an early hour, and he had able backing from his officers. Patron of the show is Sir William Nosworthy and the vice-president is Mr S. P. Taylor. The general committee for the year comprises Messrs S. Andrew, T. J. Bell, J. Blair, J. Bonifant, H. Brown, Hugh B. Brown, J. W. Butterick, S. Crosson, D. Cairns, F. P. Cookson, D. J. Doak, A. Gregory, , J. C. Guinness, C. Hale, C. G. C. Harper, J. M. Johnston, J. Lowery, S. G. Lemon, S. H. Lil], F. Merrin, J. G. McLachlan, R. A. Oakley, J. Small, D. S. Studholme. Mr A. Brown is treasurer to the Association. The catalogue boro a noteworthy list of members. Throughout the year the Association has been conducting a campaign for new members, and it has met with a good response. There are no fewer than 73 life members of the Association, while there are 432 ordinary members. The junior membership system does not seem to have appealed, as only four names appear on the list, but perhaps attention will be directed , toward a swelling of the numbers in the near future.

THE PRIZE LIST.

Sheep.

Prodbce Shed Improvement. An improvement that was a popular one with exhibitors, as well as with patrons, was the extension of the space in the produce shed. It had long been recognised that the shed was too small to adequately display the exhibits that come under the sections' housed there, and the way out was found in the removal of the luncheon room to the grandstand. This room had not been a very convenient one at any time, and the change is a complete one in every way. The new room under the grandstand is / a very well equipped place, and patrons found it much better than the old, clay-floored lunching place. Other improvements will be carried out on the grounds in the near future as a result of the special efforts being made this year for this purpose. The Queen Carnival. One of the features of the show was the interest being taken in the Queen Carnival, which has been running for some months, and which was to close at 5 o’clock to-day. There were two queens, eastern and western, and committees have been working for weeks in the interests of each. The carnival ■ is expected to bring in a large sum, and this will be augmented when the gymkhana is held in the first week of December. On the same evening, the crowning ceremony in connection with the queen carnival will be held. Attractions on the Grounds. There were many forms of amusement in a long alleyway devoted to the side shows. The machinery section was the largest for years, there being no fewer, than 25 stands in this section. Crowds of people stood about these exhibits throughout the day. The Ashburton Silver Band and the Ashburton Highland Pipe Band were in attendance, and supplied selections at frequent intervals, as well as taking part in the grand parade of prize-winning stock.

The show rings were full of attraction, too. The hunting classes claimed their full share of patronage, and ( the sheep, pig, cattle and other sections had much to present that was of the best in their type. Championship Awards.
