MID-CANTERBURY TOURNAMENT THE OPENING OF PLAY. The Mid-Canterbury championship golf tournament, organised by the Ashburton Golf Club, was opened on the Ashburton golf links this morning, and will continue over the week-end. Conditions were ideal during the morning, but the afternoon was much cooler, a southerly wind springing up. The fairways were in first-class ordei and the greens were of the best, being very fast in the afternoon play. Bogey Match, The opening match was a bogey, which was won by P. A four-ball bogey was played this after noon. There will bo a medal match to-morrow morning and another in the afternoon, while the senior and
junior championships will be decided on Monday. Caddies were used to-day for the first time. Twenty-six boys presented themselves first thing this morning and others made their appearance during the day.
