Ashburton Guardian Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1937. MR SAVAGE’S VISIT.

The visit of Mr Savage to Ashburton to-morrow is worthy of note from two circumstances. It will be his first visit to the Borough as Prime Minister, and it will be his only visit before leaving for London to represent this Dominion at the Coronation of King George the Sixth and at the Imperial Conference. Political differences do not weigh on such an occasion, and Mr Savage is assured of a hearty and sincere welcome by all sections of the community. The greetings that await him will be indicative of a due recognition of the high position he occupies and of his personal worth, and also of good wishes for his experience upon his mission to Great Britain. Regarding his position it is enough to say that whatever their political views the people of Ashburton, in common with their fellows throughout the Dominion, do not lack a sense of the respect that is due to the offices filled by members of the Government and they are capable of appreciating the heavy responsibility carried by the Prime Minister in particular as head of the Administration. On the personal side, even those who most strenuously oppose his political philosophy make no secret of their respect and liking for the man, engendered by his ready sympathy, friendliness and moderation of speech, both on and off the platform, and his obvious sincerity of purpose. Mr Savage has himself spoken of the pending Imperial Conference as likely to be the most important yet held. Whether that be so or not, it is clear that issues of great moment wili demand the consideration of the representatives of the Mother Country and the Dominions. New Zealand has in the past worthily held her place in the councils of Empire statesmen and the people confidently look to Mr Savage maintaining the tradition. The citizens of Ashburton will to-morrow welcome him not as the head of a political body, but as the representative of the Dominion as a, community united in loyalty to the Empire and capable of goodwill that rests on the broadminded basis of esteem for personal qualities.
