FARTHING DAMAGES.
WOMAN’S CLAIM FOR SLANDER, (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 24. One farthing damages on each of two counts of slander was awarded in a claim for £BOO damages heard by Mr Justice Callan and a jury. Marguerite Wrack alleged that Wiliam John Bekker, had made statements to two witnesses imputing that she performed illegal operations on girls, and w r as of a low moral character. Bekker, who was said to be 80 years of age and to have pesteredi the plaintiff to marry him, denied through his solicitor that he had used any such language. The jury found it had been proved that the language alleged had been used, but assessed the damages at only one farthing on each of the two counts.
