Gendarmes killed two and wounded three when they fired a volley into a group of miners and women who were demonstrating in support of a “stay in” strike in a mine at- Funfkirchen. Officials declare that the gendarmes fired! in self-protection when attacked by the miners’ wives, who said they had no money or food. Tlxe strikers, numbering 400, remain below, where they ignore the underground telephone. It it thought the pumps are out of action and that the workings are slowly flooding. There is also a risk of an explosion of firedamp. Tire miners’ lamps are exhausted and the pit ponies are not being fed.
