DEATH SENTENCE.
TWO MEN AT MELBOURNE.
VERDICT NOT APPROVED.

William John Cody, aged 24, a labourer, and Rupert Davies, aged 28, a storeman, were found guilty of the murder of James Edward: Scriver on January 1, 1936. Both were sentenced to death. Scriver, a titles offic messenger, was fatally shot while acting as escort to a clerk who was; carrying a cash bag containing £1758. Women screamed and men muttered disapproval when the foreman announced the verdict.
Both the convicted men protested their innocence, and said they had not had a fair trial.
The Judge said that every point in their favour had been carefully placed before the jury.
