THE ABDICATION
REFERENCES BY BISHOPS. THE CHOICE BEFORE EDWARD. THE NATION AND THE CROWN, United Press Association—Copyright; (Received This Day, 10.25 a.m.) LONDON, December 23. Four more bishops referred in their diocesan letters to the abdication of King Edward. The Bishops of Manchester and Coventry paid tributes to King Edward’s gifts and service, but consider Iris abdication u navoidable.
The Bishop of Ely says that Britain is not opposed to the marriage with Mrs Simpson on account of her rank or nationality, but could not accept a Queen with two husbands living. If the King had sacrificed his personal inclination there would undoubtedly be a feeling of uneasiness qualifying loyalty to the Throne. The Bishop of Bradford says that marriage with Mrs Simpson would have immensely diminished the influence of tire Crown. The issue was therefore clear and stark.
