FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Dec. 24, 1886.) South Rakaia.—The Rev. H. Collins has been appointed as resident clergyman for the Church of England at South Rakaia. Mr Collins was at South Rakaia some years ago. For nearly two years the church has had no regular clergyman, and only three services have been held in the church. The Rey. F. Shortening Traffic Bridge.—A conference of the members of the Ashburton County and Borough Councils was held at the County Council Chambers for the purpose of discussing a proposal to shorten traffic bridge, or otherwise to asphalt the remaining half. There were present: Messrs John Lambie (chairman), C. J. Harper, G. Murdoch, H. Friedlander, John Cairns, John Studholme, W. T. Lill (representing the County Council), and Messrs Henry Davis, IP. Stewart and C. W. Nicoll (representing the ’§■ rough Council). In reply to a question the County Overseer (Mr O. Morrison) said that the approximate cost of shortening the bridge would be £9lB, and carrying Mr Friedlander’s proposal into effect, £450. It was decided that the conference recommend the County Council to asphalt about three and a half chains to connect the present asphalted portion to that point from which it was proposed to dismantle the bridge to the Tinwald end.
