FROM CANADA TO AUSTRALIA. NEW ZEALAND INCLUDED. A CALL AT LOS ANGELES. United Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.0 p.m.) NEW YORK, November 11. Tho Associated Press has been informed of some of the details of a contemplated new Canadian - Australian - New Zealand service by two liners, 'reported to have been approved by the Imperial Maritime Committee. The plans are completed and all is in readiness in Scottish yards to begin the construction of at least one ship. A Glasgow expert inspected Matson liners here recently, with special emphasis on the woodwork, in which, as well as other aspects, the British boats are expected to excel the American craft. The new liners will he of 25,009 tons, with a speed of 24 knots, and the latest details of propulsion, comfort and beauty. The shipbuilders asked for two years for completion, but will he ready to complete building in 18 months or a year if necessary. The terminus of the line will he Y ancouver, hut there will be a call at Los Angeles in preference to San Francisco, on the ground that a larger number oi tourists want to visit .Hollywood.
Shipping circles here consider the trans-Tasman legislation as an agreedupon preliminary to the building of British liners, and little surprise is expressed at the intention to exclude American shipping from tho benefits of Tasman trade.
It is understood that the general passenger manager (Mr Ityan) privately observed that the Matson Line would welcome the entrance of new ships, as there is traffic enough to fill both lines for years, and that at the height of the season the Matson Line is compelled to turn away much good through traffic. As an instance he referred to the Matson Line’s intention to book no large parties in 1937, and said that the tourist traffic had hardly been tapped.
