SWIMMING.

POSITION OF ASHBURTON CLUB 1 . OFFER TO SCHOOL COMMITTEE. Discussion on the future activities of the Ashburton Swimming Club occupied tho attention of those present at the annual meeting of the club last evening. It was finally decided to approach tlie Borough School Committee with an offer for tho season, after ail amendment that the club carry on in the usual way was defeated. Mr H. P. Milsom presided. Mr H. McElrea said the club should carry on if possible. If tlie committee did not accept the conditions the club could abandon operations for the year. The chairman said it was not advisable to abandon the club as there would be difficulty in restarting it. Mr A. McCallum said it was not for the committee to accept the club’s conditions. The club had to accept them or leave them. The chairman said money was owed on debentures and this had to be paid off. An endeavour should be made to do this. The annual report stated that _ the club began the season wtih a debit of £7 5s 5d and ended with credit of £4 14s 3d. This was very satisfactory and many thanks were due .to the committee for the able way in which it handed the club’s finance.

Throughout the season the baths were very well patronised while conditions were not of the best.. The year closed with a membership nearly approaching the record mark. The baths during the season did not need very much spent of them owing to great improvements made by the last Committee. The only draw on the finance was the payment for water. Toward the end of the season a deputation from the Borough School Committee met tlie club committee and after referring to an agreement made in 1933 they decided to pay half the cost of the water. The usual carnivals were held but the weather was not favourable, and was only fair for the annual carnival. The Do Beer Cup was won by Ashburton and the Connolly Cup by A. Mathieson of East Ashburton. June Vincent and G. Bowden of the Ashburton Club annexed the girls’ and hoys’ intermediate championship. Tho annual challenge carnival resulted in a win for the Ashburton Club. The club’s relay teams had a very successful season, ' winning the Newton and Friedlander Cups. The present financial position of the club was sound, but owing to unsatisfactory arrangements with the Borough School Committee difficulty might be experienced in carrying on. Disappointment was expressed with support given by club members and attendances at public carnival, although by holding children’s carnivals an endeavour was made to foster public support. Tho election of officers resulted:— President, Mr A. McCallum ; vice-presi-dents. Messrs S. Madden, H. Milsom and J. W. Bowden; secretary, Mr H. McElrea, assistant, Mr B. H. Knox; treasurer, Mr A. Bray, club captain, Mr H. V. Brygent; committee, Messrs R. G. Ross, B'. Knox, A. Cookson, B. McMillan, R. Macmillan, Misses J. Denley and J. Vincent; handicap-

pers, the captain and secretary; delegates to centre, Messrs McLauchlan, R. G. Ross and Milsom; auditor, Mr J. Keig.
