STRICKLAND BEATS LIMOUSIN.
TECHNICAL KNOCKOUT IN NINTH
(United Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.10 p.m.) LONDON, September 7. At Wandsworth Stadium, Maurice Strickland (New Zealand) won on a technical knock-out against Gustav Limousin, heavy-weight champion of Belgium, in the ninth round. Limousin’s imposing Continental record over Obie Walker marked him as a fit opponent for Strickland, whom some English critics consider has been Foord’s most dangerous rival. Jordan and Berensden watched the fight. In first round Limousin failed to connect with several terrific blows. Strickland, after quietly sizing up bis man, sent in pile-driving rights to the body. Limousin’s big punches were dangerous, but did not show much finish. Strickland won the thir« round, chiefly with body-punching. Limousin, was cautioned against holding in the fourth, the New Zealander scoring to head and body as the Belgian’s punches went wide. Limousin gamely attempted recovery, but in the eighth a smashing left hook downed him for seven, and after rising he was floored for nine.
The Belgian was in a bad way at the bell, Strickland punishing him heavily, when the referee intervened in the ninth of the scheduled 10 rounds.
STRICKLAND TO MEET PHILLIPS. (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) LONDON, September 7. Maurice Strickland, the New Zealander, will meet Eddie Phillips, British cruiser-weight champion, on the same programme as Len Harvey’s fight against John Lewis at Wembley in November.
