(Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, September 7. ■Whitehall has instructed Mr Ogilvie (Minister in Charge at Madrid), also the Ambassador at Hendaye, to investigate stories that there is a likelihood of both sides using poison-gas in Spain, pointing out the grave consequences of such action.

GAS ATTACK ON MADRID FEARED. (Received This Day, 9.20 a.m.) MADRID, Sept. 7. The ’counsellor of tlio British Embassy lias issued a final warning to Britons to avacuate Madrid. He states there is a possibility that the rebels may drop mustard gas ?>ombs on the capital, and Britons who remain will do so at their own risk. “I am authorised to close the consulate whenever I wish.” The Mayor of Madrid has issued detailed instructions to deal with gas attacks. He has ordered chemists to remain open day and night, and established first-aid stations in various parts of the city. Further disquietening reports come from Morocco, where Moorish discontent with General Franco is becoming grave. The sound of heavy gunfire can ho heard in the direction of Larache.
