LUCKY ESCAPE.
CAR PLUNGES INTO DRAIN. (Per Press Association). PALMERSTON NORTH, Sept. 7. Three Wanganui residents, Mr Gordon Babbage, a ! ged 51, Miss Barbara Babbage, his daughter, aged 18, and Mr Kenneth Handley, aged 23, of Rapanui, had a remarkable escape when their car failed to negotiate a bend at Whakarongo, a few miles from the city yesterday, and plunged, into a drain, coming to rest facing in a direction opposite to that in which it had been travelling. Mr Babbage suffered concussion and internal injuries, Miss Babbage a fracture of the lower jaw, and Mr Handley shocks and possible internal injuries. AH were sent to hospital and tlieir condition this morning was satisfactory.
