LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Sept. 8, 1886). The Licensing Committee—The peculiar course taken by the Borough Licensing Committee at its last meeting has naturally elicited considerable public comment and provoked some not altogether complimentary remarks. “Civis” in a letter is more especially severe, describing the committee's action in granting extension in some instances and refusing the like privileges in others as without rhyme or reason, while another coH,espondent regards the decision arrived at by the commissioners as rather a singular one and open to criticism from all lovers of fair play. Dogs Among Sheep.—Mr W. H. Rule, of Pendarves, has suffered serious loss through the depredations of dogs among his flock. Over 130 iambs have been worried and have died. Many of these have had ‘ their backs broken and as there are teeth marks on each side of the backbone Mr Rule thinks the mischief has been worked by greyhounds. Accident to Minister.—The Rev. Mr Beattie met with a rather awkward accident while digging in his garden. Ho slipped and fell on the spade, breaking one of his ribs. He did not feel any untoward effects for a- day or two, but was not able to conduct services in the church yesterday. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Sept. 8, 1911). A gentleman who is in a position to have accurate knowledge states that thousands of sheepskins taken from sheep who had died were coming to hand. Judging by this, he expressed the opinion that mortality among hocks must be exceptionally neav.y.
