METHVEN. THE WOMEN’S DIVISION. The monthly meeting of the Methyen branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was presided over by the president (Mrs Martin Macale). It was decided to hold a hall, and Mesdames Macale, Wilson, and Cotterill were appointed a sub-committee to meet the Young Farmers’ Club to make arrangements. The president stated that the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, would co-operate in this function. A donation from Mrs Holmes was accepted with thanks. The secretary was authorised to procure a supply of cookery books.* Mrs B. Cotterill gave an address on poultry raising and was accorded a vote of thanks. Competitions, judged by popular vote, resulted as follows: —Bloom, Mrs W. Ashcroft 1, Mrs M. Macale 2, Mrs A. L. Mangin 3; vegetables, Mrs T. S. Harrison 1, Mrs W. Ashcroft 2, Mesdames Holland, and Ashcroft (equal) 3. The scones competition, judged by Mrs J. Fleming, resulted:—Mrs W. Ashcroft 1, Mrs A. Wilson 2, Mrs S. Robinson 3.

Mesdames Ashcroft, Robinson, and Body were the hostesses.

SEAFIELD. THE WOMEN’S DIVISION. At the monthly meeting cf the Seafield branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union Mrs R. J. Martin presided. Mrs A. P. Bruce gave an address cn the life and work of Schubert. Misses N. Dennison and J. Bruce were elected delegates for the Girls’ Educational Week held in Christchurch. It was decided to pay £1 toward the delegates’ expenses. ■Competitions resulted as follow: Smocking, Mrs A. J. Bruce 1, Mrs M. Naismith 2, Mrs J. McDonald 3; Juniors, Mrs F. Taylor 1, Miss J. Bruce 2. Napoleon cake, iced: Mrs H. Driscoll 1, Mrs J. Mitchell 2, Mrs R. Grice 3; juniors, Miss J. Mitchell 1. Bulbs grown in fibre: Mrs R. J. Martin 1, Miss J. Bruce 2, Mrs J. Gregory 3. Hay’s cushion competition: Miss H. Johnson 1, Miss N. Dennison 2, Miss M. Martin 3.

The hostesses were Mrs McDonald and Mrs Mitchell,

Rifle Club’s Card Evening.

A card evening conducted by the Seafield Miniature Rifle Club was held in the club rooms. There was a good attendance. The women’s prize was won by Miss Molly Baynes, who scored 125, the runner-up being Mrs G. Moorhead, with 123. The men’s prize was wen by Mr G. Moorhead, senr., who scored 125, while Mr G. Baynes, with 119, was runner-up. The return match between Seafield and Ohertsey was arranged for to-mor-row evening in the Pendarves Hall.

HIGHBANK. THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The September meeting of the Highbank Women’s Institute took the form of a social afternoon. The president (Mrs A. H. Sandrey) presided. Competitions were won by Mrs A. S. Kennedy (apple-paring), Mrs White (rolling jam jar), Mrs A. S. Findlay (musical switch). Afternoon tea was provided by members. Points in the monthly competitions were gained as follow:—Snapshot l(farm scene), —Senior: Miss A. Ledgerwood and Mrs Kneale (equal) 1, Mrs Watson 3, Mrs Hyland 4; junior, Miss Watson 1, Miss Paul 2, Miss Cretney 3. Bloom—Senior: Mesdames Wilson and Sandrey (equal) 1, Miss C'arr 3, Mrs Bouse 4: junior, Miss Watson 1, Misses M. Paul and R. Sandrey (equal) 2, Miss Cretney 4. Bottled pears— Senior: Miss Haskett 1, Mrs Currie 2, Mrs Mehrtens 3; junior, Miss Watson 1, Missß. Sandrey 2, Miss Findlay 3. Wheatmeal scones—Senior: Mrs Callaghan 1, Miss C'arr 2, Mrs Hyland 3; junior, Miss M. Paul 1, Miss Paul 2, Miss Watson 3.
