IRUN HOLDS OUT

DESPERATE REBEL EFFORT. MUCH BOMBINC AND SHELLING. DYNAMITE BOMBS. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 1.25 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 1. Still another desperate rebel effort to capture Irun failed. Shelling and bombiing from sea, land and air continued all day, but when the barrage eventually subsided, the rebel's had little to show for their vast expenditure of ammunition. Wave after wave of rebels was checked by deadly Government fire. Irun is still awaiting the shock of an infantry attack, which was heralded by the bombardment throughout to-day. The,casualties at Irun. to-day were probably more severe. So far the rebels have lost more heavily than the defenders. Government forces brought up “Dynamiterose,” a dare-devil miner, equipped with improvised dynamite bombs, which caused devastating gaps in the rebel ranks. Throughout the day 7 bullets whizzed over French territory. All the roads across the frontier have been closed. RED MILITIA FEARED. CLOSING OF GERMAN EMBASSY. (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.) BERLIN, September 1. The German Embassy at Madrid is imperilled owing to the unreliability of the Red militia, which superseded the guard of regular police and troops. The Spanish Government, in reply to the protest, sayts it is unable to supply police, because none are available. The “Borsen Zeitung” declares that this is characteristic of the Government and the general situation. CHURCH- FUNDS CONFISCATED. REIGN OF TERROR IN MADRID. (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.) MADRID, September 1. The police arrested a banker, Senor Luis Muguirs, and confiscated £T,500,000 of which he was trustee on behalf of religious organisations. The people’s tribunal, sitting in the rpodel gaol,. continues sentencing to death and to long terms of imprisonment officers of the Corazanchel garrison outside the city who revolted. GERMAN ’PLANES FOR REBELS. WITH ARMY PILOTS IN CHARGE. LONDON, August 31. The correspondent of the “NewsChronicle” at Seville asserts that German ’planes, with civilian pilots, continue to fly to Spain, where they are taken' over by German Army pilots who have travelled overland. They are then delivered to the rebels. THE EMBARGO ON ARMS. SEVERAL POWERS AGREE. LONDON, August 31. Agreement to impose an immediate embargo on the export of arms and aircraft to Spain, and to a joint conference to consider further problems as they arise, has been notified by several other powers during the weekend. They include, in addition to those already mentioned, Sweden, Austria, Bulgaria., Albania, Norway and Latvia. —British Official Wireless. DELEGATION TO FRANCE CONFERRING WITH COMMUNISTS LONDON, August 31. Senora Ferliri, known as La Passionaria, is among a delegation of four from the Spanish Government, who have arrived at Paris to-night, and are expected to confer with the Communists and Trades Union leaders. The deputation drove straight to the Spanish Embassy, declining to make a statement meanwhile. AMERICANS ADVISED TO LEAVE. WASHINGTON, August 31. The State Department to-day issued a final warning to Americans to evacuate Spain, indicating that the bombing of the destroyer Kane, combined with other considerations, would probably lead to the early removal of all war vessels from Spanish waters, and that the closing of the Embassy at Madrid and consulates in the danger zones was considered possible. BRITISH RED CROSS AT BARCELONA. LONDON, September 1. An English Red Cross unit, also a Scottish ambulance unit have reached Barcelona.
