COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondents.) METHVEN. FOOTBALL CLUB DANCE. The Methven Football Club held a very successful and enjoyable dance in the Town Hall on Thursday night to celebrate the victory of the club in the Ashburton County senior competition. There was a, large attendance of members and supporters, as well as representatives and visitors from other districts. Music for the dance was played by Campbell Bros.’ Band (Christchurch), with extras by Mrs A. Lawrence, Miss Petrie and Mr J. Cretney. Mr It. J. L. Duff was Master of Ceremonies. The president of the club (Mr J. Wootton) welcomed those present and congratulated the club on winning the Watters Cup. Mr F. Kennedy (representing the Ashburton Itugby Union) presented the cup to Mr J. McAlister (captain of the Methven team). Mr A. McCormack (the coach) expressed his appreciation of the way in which the team had turned out to training practices and for the good, clean sporting games they had played. RAKAIA. THE WOMEN’S DIVISION. At the monthly meeting of the Mead branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Mrs Burns presided. Competitions resulted as follows: Something new from something old: Mrs Hight 1, Mrs Hornsby 2, Miss D. Weaver 3. Sultana cake: Miss D. Taylor 1, Mrs Evrnsby 2. A jumble .birds competition was won by Miss Welling. The hostesses were Mrs G. Breading and Miss Burrell. MAYFIELD. THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. A congregational meeting of the Mayfield Presbyterian Church was held in the church, on Thursday evening. In the absence of the Rev. D l . D. MacLachlan (interim-moderator) the Rev. R. Bibby, of Methven, presided. The chief business was the filling of the charge made vacant by the resignation of the Rev. A. D. Kirkland. It was decided that the charge should lyecome fully sanctioned, and that the salary offered be £2BO a year, with £SO car allowance. The following selection committee was appointed:—Mesdames J. A. Fleming and Turner, Messrs L. C. Mcllroy, D. R, Howden, H. C. Barton, P. McDowell, R. McLay (session members ex-officio), J. W. Kingan, G. Johnston, C. Sewell, ;P. A. Fleming, and J. McCormick. ASHTON-WATERTON. THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Ashton-Water-ton Women’s Institute held in the Waterton Hall on Thursday afternoon, when Mrs Shimmins presided. The motto was “Help a little and you help much.” The meeting agreed to give a donation to the Institute shop to be opened in Christchurch. An interesting and helpful demonstration was given on making lampshapes by Mrs Lattimore (Winslow), who was accompanied by Miss A. Watts. The financial statement of the recent birthday party showed a very satisfactory credit balance of £4 3s 9d. The competitions, judged by Mesdames Small and Allan, resulted: — Hand-worked toilet set, Miss W. Blee 1, Miss E. Read 2, Miss E. Soal' 3; shortbread, Mrs Shimmins 1, Misses M. and W. Blee (equal) 2, Miss E. Read 4; sausage rolls, Mrs Shimmins 1, Misses M. and W. Blee (equal) 2, Miss E. Read 4. The hostesses were Misses M. Blee and L. Read.
