FALSE STATEMENT.
MONEY FROM DEPARTMENT. (Per Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, This Day. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Peter James Duncan, aged 35, was admitted to probation for a year after pleading guilty to having obtained £7 4s from the Labour Department by falsely representing that two of his children were living with, and being maintained by him. Detective-Sergeant Knight said that the Department wished it to lie generallv known that similar offences were becoming prevalent and it would in future press for a penalty. Mr H. Morgan, S.M., stated, that future offenders would find it difficult to obtain probation.
