METHVEN. J THE PLANTING OF TREES. A plantation of trees designed for shelter as well as ornamentation has been planted, by the Ashburton County Council on the south side of the stormwater channel adjoining the Methven racecourse. The trees, which comprise Lombardy poplars, Oregon, Wellingtonia, cedars, Lawsoniana, oaks, alders, ash, and birch, will replace the plantation of pinus insignis which had reached maturity and was cut out recently. Personals. Mr L. C. Anderson, of Lyndhurst, who has been on a holiday trip to Suva, has returned home. Messrs John Watson, A. E. Henderson and J. F. Stone, of Methven, have returned home after a month’s holiday trip to Suva and a motoring trip in the North Island. Mr and Mrs E. F. Ward, of Methven, left to-day on a six weeks’ trip to Sydney and Melbourne. HIGHBANK. THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The president (Mrs A. H. Sandrey) presided at the monthly meeting of the Highbank Women’s Institute, at which there was a good attendance. It was decided to support the Women’s Institute shop to be opened in Christchurch at the end of this month. It was agreed that the next meeting take the form of a social afternoon. Mrs Hopwood, of Tinwald, gave a demonstration of rag mat making. Completed mats were handed round for inspection. The president gave a comprehensive and interesting report of the annual meeting held in Dunedin, at which she was delegate. Ledgerwood, Mesdames Mehrtens, Milne, O’Brien, Thompson, and Miss Ida Paid. BARRHILL. FORTNIGHTLY SOCIAL. At the fortnightly social: arranged by the Barrhill School Committee, euchre prizes were won by Miss C. McNeil and Mr M. Mahoney. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss B. Chambers and Mr M. Mahoney. Dance music was supplied by Mr T. Lawler, with extras by Miss B. Tizzard and Mr H. Leaman. Messrs Arnold Leadley and W. Holmes were Masters of Ceremonies. MOUNT SOMERS. THE WOMENS INSTITUTE. At the monthly meeting of the Mount .Somers Women’s Institute, held in the Library, Mrs W. J. Quantock presided over a very good attendance. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs D. W. Herron in her illness. Mrs Quantock welcomed the visitors, also two new members. The Group Convener (Mrs L. H. Ruddock) thanked those who had helped with the arrangements in connection with the drama trials. The profits amounted to £2 17s for each Institute. Several congratulatory letters were read congratulating Mount Somers on their wip. The Federation sent a cheque for £1 7s, asking that a 4s 6d book be purchased for eacli player. Miss M. Morgan and Mrs Comyns were appointed delegates to the halfyearly meeting of the council. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs 'Alexander, who typed the programmes for the year free of charge. It was decided to send her a Women’s Institute cookery book in appreciation. An interesting report on the Dominion Conference, held at Dunedin, was given by jVfrs A. R. Beckley. It was decided to take a crate of goods from the Blind Institute, also from the Disabled Soldiers’ League. A talk on home nursing by Mrs A. Bruce (of the Staveley Institute) was very much enjoyed. Sewing for the Presbyterian Orphanage was distributed, and the peggy square quilt which was made by Miss M. Morgan was brought in. Mrs J. T. Wightman was in charge of the sales table, and the hostesses were Mesdames C. J. Johnstone, T. Kerr and C. Harris. CHERTSEY. THE WOMANS INSTITUTE. The August meeting of the Chertsey Institute was held in the Pendarves Hall, when Mrs J. W. Watson presided. Sympathy was extended to Mrs \\. Hurst in the death of her husband. _ Misses M. Hanrahan and M. Robinson were appointed delegates to the half-yearly Federation meeting in October. Mrs J. R, Wells (Ashburton) gave an interesting account of the Milford Sound and its world-famed scenery. A report on the annual conference held in (Dunedin was given by the delegate, Miss Lorna Lambie. THE GIRL GUIDES. A meeting of the Springburn association of mothers in connection with the Girl Guides was held on Tuesday, Mrs W. Norman presiding. Arrangements were made for a united church service for the consecration and presentation of the company’s world flag. It was decided to take the company for a day’s visit to Christchurch next week. Social Evenings. The first of a series of socials in connection with the Springburn School was held in the school, with an attendance of 40. The prize-winners were Mr and Mrs E. Aldridge. For the dance which followed Messrs L. H. Bansgrove, F. W. Cutler and A. Fagan supplied the music.
