SAN SEBASTIAN BOMBARDED.
REBEL LANDING PARTIES READY REPLY BY SHORE BATTERIES. LONDON, August 19. The Hendaye correspondent of “The Times” says one was killed and 50 wounded during a bombardment of San Sebastian by the insurgent warships Almirante Cervera and Espana. Twenty shells fell inside the harbour and 80 in different parts of the town, battering several houses. One shell fell on a maternity hospital. Both ships are believed to have landing parties aboard, and a strict watch is being kept on the coast to prevent any attempt at a landing. As a reprisal for the bombardment it is reported that Count Romanones and three other prominent hostages are to be tried, for high treason.
The Irun correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” reports that the insurgent warships later heavily shelled Fort Guadalupe, overlooking Irun. but moved off when the fort began to reply. An intercepted wireless message from the Almirante Cervera stated that she was going to Ferrol for repairs. The vessel is believed to have been hit and badly damaged by a shell from one of the shore batteries.
