OBITUARY.

MR JOHN RUMSEY. The death of Mr John Rumsey, who has been a well-known figure in the Ashburton district for oven* 50 years, occurred at his residence, 43 Beach Road, yesterday. Mr Rumsey was in his 71st year, .file had been in indifferent health for several years, but had been able to get about till about four weeks ago. Born in England, Mr Rumsey came to New Zealand 63 years ago, arriving at Lyttelton in the ship Waitaki, and early this year he attended a reunion of the few surviving passengers. He came to Ashburton County over fifty years ago, and worked on the Goldstream Estate for some time before joining the Railway Department. About 30 years ago he left the railways, and took up work at the Canterbury Roller Flour Mills, in West Street, and retired six years ago. Mr Rumsoy’s chief interest in local affairs centred in lodge work. He was Grand Master of the Loyal Waterton Lodge soon after its formation over 50 years ago, later joining the Loyal Ashburton Lodge, and he was a member of both Masonic Lodges in Ashburton, being tyler for 33 years. Of a reserved but genial nature, Mr Rumsey made a host of friends in Ashburton. He leaves a widow and one daughter (Mrs G. Leadley, of Dunedin). Mr Rumsey was a member of the Ashburton Club and M.S.A., and the flag on the club premises was flown at half-mast to-day out of respect to his memory.

MR HERBERT ROSS DIX. (Per Press Association). BLENHEIM, This Day. Mr Herbert Ross Dix, a prominent motor trader, is dead, aged 62. He was the president of the Marlborough Aero Club, a former vice-president of the New Zealand Aero Club, and president of the New Zealand Boxing Association.
