TELEPHONES AND POSTAGES.
RECORD SAVINGS DEPOSITS. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Postmaster-General (the Hon. F. Jones) stated to-day that the Post Office expects completely to recover its former position in respect to telephone subscribers within a few months, as only 1691 were needed to reach a total in excess of the 132,855 connections recorded in December, 1930. The net gains of subscribers in the last three months totalled, 1963, so the old peak should he passed in September at the latest. The recovery of the Post Office Savings Banks was equally remarkable. The total of deposits at the end of the last financial year was £52,830,240. The amount of deposits was now at its highest point in the Dominion’s experience, exceeding the pre-depression peak by £3,393,759. Postage receipts, too/, provided evidence of increasing business activity. The revenue for the year ended March 31 last was £1,260,994, being an improvement of £138,863 on the figures for the previous year.
