Alford Forest Library—The annual election of the Alford Forest Library committee was held on Monday» evening last. The following were electedul— Messrs H. Knight (chairman), J. Moore (treasurer). 1;. Volunteer Ball.—The annual Vdluhteer Ball was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall last evening, and was certainly one of the most successful affairs of the kind ever held in Ashburton. There was a very large attendance about 200 guests being present/ and dancing to the strains of the Ashburton Brass Band was kept up with spirit till the small hours. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. Shortening the Traffic Bridge.—Encouragement for the local authorities that are moving for the shortening of the Ashburton traffic bridge may be found in Jhe fact that a meeting of local bodies interested in the new Ashley bridge at Rangiora to discuss a proposal to shorten the structure by a span. Police Raid.—Sergeant Fouhy and Constable H. Martin raided a house in Allenton last evening and seized a small quantity of whisky. The Plunket Nurse.-r-In future the Ashburton Plunket nurse will be in attendance in the Society’s rooms' on Tuesdays and not on Saturdays. Hockey Club Social. —The Ashburton Ladies’ Hockey Club held their annual social in the Theatre Royal on Wednesday evening. There was a large attendance, and dancing was engaged in till the early hours of the morning to music supplied by Terris’s Band. A bountiful supply of refreshments was provided by the ladies, and a most enjoyable time was spent by all present. Socialised Briquettes.—Hie State briquette works have been restarted and work will be continued until the present stock of tar is used up. The “Grey ‘River Argus” states that the Mines Department does not hold out much hope of the works being permanently continued.
