DEFIANT REPLY.
CANTON GOVERNMENT AND JAPAN. ARMED INTERVENTION FEARED. (United Press Association—Copyright) CANTON, June 17.
There are grave fears of armed Japanese intervention in South China after the Canton Government's defiant reply to the protest of the Japanese Consul-General against anti-Japanese demonstrations.
The reply bluntly declared that the demonstrations were inevitable sequels to Japan's aggression in North China. If Japan wished them to cease, she must change her behaviour. The reply promised full protection for Japanese nationals, but emphasised that the authorities could not prohibit anti-Japanese activities because they represented "the manifestation of the people's will,, and the natural reaction to Japanese action."
