LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian," June 18, 1886). Court at Methven. Mr W. C. Walker. M.H.R., has forwarded a letter from the Minister of Justice to Mr J. C. McMillan, of Methven, which states that a Magistrate's Court will be held each month at Methven. The Road Board offices will be used for the purposes of the Court, and Constable Bourke will be appointed clerk. The Increase of Rabbits. —It is reported that rabbits are rapidly increasing in the hill districts of this county. In view of the new danger to our agricultural and pastoral pursuits, it may be of interest to a section of pur readers to learn that the law does not require the rabbit inspector to point out the mode in which rabbits are to be destroyed. The land owner must choose his own mode, and he will be subject to a penalty if the mode he chooses is not satisfactory to the inspector. The Hounds. The Ashburton bounds met at Methven yesterday, and several short runs were enjoyed. Among those prominent in the field were Mrs Rouse and Misses T. E. Upton, F. Russell, A. H. Helmore, Allan (2), Alington, Rouse, Cunningham, J. R. Hart, C. Wynn-Williams, F. McCafferty, C. ID. Mereweather, Rees, Chapman Kearney and Rodney.
